DJs for DRC

One subject that seems to be hushed by mainstream media is The Dominican Republic of Congo. Currently the country is recovering from an ongoing civil war that has claimed over 3 million lives. Many people are now dying from disease and starvation, and there is an estimate of 45,000 civilians dying per month. The Congo is described as 'the worst in the world' for sexual violence and rape, where many women and children are often kidnapped and forced to work as sexual slaves. Education is also lacking in this country, as 5.2 million children could not receive an education due to the war, and many parents cannot even afford to pay enrollment fees to send their children to primary school.

DJ and producer Jay Haze has started the DJs for DRC project: a charity to provide relief for those living in the Congo. The project targets those working in the dance industry and asks DJs to contribute 50% of their earning fees to DJs for DRC. Jay Haze states "DJs are blessed to be able to travel the world playing the music they love, and they can make a small sacrifice like this to make a collective difference in the world". DJs who have contributed include Tiefschwarz, Loco Dice, M.A.N.D.Y, Luke Solomon, Luciano, Spencer Parker, Tiga and DJ Sneak. Jay Haze has also pledged to donate half of his DJ fees from September until the end of this year and contributed all of the proceeds from his Fabric 47 album. Be sure to keep an eye out for Jay's documentary, as he plans to travel and film through the Congo in Spring of 2010 to spread more awareness of this tragic situation.
